A portable knock box is wheeled into place on days when small animals are butchered in this multi-species plant. A drive-thru stock trailer chute makes unloading easy for producers. Animals cross the scale then into the holding pens. A selector gate directs animals from the crowd pen into the large or small animal single file chutes.

Description

Sheep, pigs, goats, and cattle are slaughtered in this facility. The owners slaughter cattle on one day, and the small animals on a separate day. The knock box for small animals must be moved in and out of the area to free the space needed for cattle to roll out of the knock box. It’s possible to process cattle in the morning, and pigs, sheep or goats in the afternoon. In this set up, stock trailers deliver all the animals coming to the plant. Over the years, this plan has been adapted with a ramp for large trucks, stock trailers, and direct access from fattening pens. Stock trailers pull in and stop at the end. The 5’6″ gates are chained to the trailer to prevent animals from turning back. The 12′ gate is open to the drive alley and the animals turn and cross the scale into the pens. The alleys and pen fences must be constructed so the small animals cannot escape. The grooved concrete floors must be deep for cattle. This facility was designed with solid sided fences in the high use areas like the curved lane and crowd pen, and single file chutes. Blocking vision with solid fences keeps animals calm. The pen fence can be pipe and rail with open sides or large mesh fence to the floor.
